Mondays

Do Monday's get you down? Getting back into the work week whether at home or away can be daunting, especially after a time change. I needed some Powergize to get me going today!
Last spring I took the plunge and started purchasing inexpensive indoor plants. I wanted fresh, live green things in our home. I had no clue of what I was doing but I started with two, $1.99 flowering succulents. I then asked all my Face Book friends if they knew the names of my new friends. I watered them weekly and eventually the flowers fell off  and reflowered once. I thought they were on deaths door but I am happy to report a year later they are still alive! I am utterly amazed because somehow I find indoor plants to be harder to take care of than a newborn.

Mondays are laundry and watering day around our home. I find that scheduling this activity for when I know I will be home for a large portion of the day means there is more of a chance I will water all the green things! Currently I have 2 Fiddle Leaf Fig trees and 5 potted plants (no idea of the names of any of them). The only ones I've done a bit of "research" on are the Fiddle Leafs. I was really concerned about over watering and proper sunlight as these trees are sunbathers.

Today was there first watering since bringing them home and potting them two weeks ago. And look, one has even sprouted  two new leaves! Okay, I realize most find this really boring so I'll stop ooing and awing over my new skills. Here's what I do:

Every Monday my potted plants sit in the sink and get a good drink and plenty of time to drain. The trees get watered every other Monday. I have no idea how I will remeber that but there are these cool little moisture devices that tell you if your pant needs water and the range for Fiddle Leaf is 5 to 6. I will be testing these babies! This all I do.

I have had to move plants around to make sure they are getting proper lighting. Our kitchen table, let's just call it the last supper table, is where my pretty plants go to die. Not sure why because it seems to get enough sun light. Usually they start to wilt and my husband comes in and removes them before they completely die. But die the do...just out of my sight. Like I said I buy cheap plants because I am a newbie and in my defense most have lived. I've only lost two. I am having fun, learning and it's a lot cheaper on our budget than roses.
Are you an indoor gardener like me? What have you had the most luck with? Please feel free to share your tips in the comments below. I can use all the help I can get.
Happy Monday!
Julie

P.O.O.P.I.E

People Opposing Objectionable Pretend plants in the Environment ! Okay folks it's been a week....which is way too long. Schooling 3 1/2 is a bit daunting at times. My other excuse.....I've been freaking out about lice for over a week. No, I didn't have it (this time around), but I've scratched myself raw over it! On to P.O.O.P.I.E.! Over at Nestor's she's done a short series on what's a good fake and what's not ( errr flowers that is). So after you take a peak at mine head over there and read hers and everyone else' poop (can I say that?), I mean blogs! Nesting Place is in my side bar if you need directions ( I wanted to put the button up, but have no clue). These are my year round fakies .... Superman gave me the floral arrangement about 12 years ago when we couldn't afford flowers, who am I kidding....we still can't! I did change out the pedestal urn they came in. My wonderful ivy on top of the cabinets. My chicks have always ha...

Facial Cleanser

We've been using a surprisingly wonderful face wash for about 6 months. Guess What it is? Olive & Castor Oil! I was really surprised at how well it works and you can customize the formula to you own needs. For people with T-zone, dry or oily conditions. At www.theoilcleansingmethod.com/ they give all the details. I used an old facial cleanser bottle and tweaked the instructions to fit our needs. -15% Castor oil -85% olive oil -Shake and place in shower with wash cloth. - Gently rub 1 to 2 pumpfuls into face, neck, ears etc. (before you get in) -Use the warmth of shower to open pores. -Heat wash cloth with water, place on face for a minute or so. Then gently rub off excess oil, make up and dirt. Like I said, we've been using this for 6 months or so. In that time I've had only 1 blemish ( I'm a t-zone). My face is so much smoother and softer and this is all I do. No more 3 parts, no extra lotions! The above recipe has worked well for dry and t-zone. So we only h...

Nitrate Free Pepperoni

I'm not sure if I should show you the picture or not. I tweaked a recipe from Tammy's Recipes and it is quite tasty. BUT (and it's kind of a big BUT) the color is just not right. So the pepperoni looks a little grey (gross) but again taste SUPER! So here goes nothing.... nitrate free pepperoni See how gray it looks? That's because I used Real Salt (sea salt) instead of curring salts which have all the nitrates and fake pink color (they do this so people won't mistake it for table salt). That pink dye also gives sausages of all types that nice color we are all so used too. All the flavor was still in there and I figured if I'm making this homemade I want it to be as healthy as possible for my family. So why would I add the nitrates? Because I didn't use the pink salt I can't just leave this out in my pantry like you could with some of the store bought stuff. If you do to try this recipe and decide to go "all natural" please make sure that you ...
